It’s just 4 kilometres from Khorda towards Nayagarh.
My connection with this place started when I was hearing regular stories from my grandmother about this hideout place of the king and his disguise days. She was from Khorda and very proud of her birthplace. My grandmother’s eldest brother was Dewan to the Nayagarh king and was paying frequent secret visits to this ashram and meeting Raja Rishi, who was a raja and rishi at the same time. My grandma, as a kid, had visited with his brother and seen him. He was not so tall but very fair and soft spoken. She was told by her brother not to reveal anyone about the Raja Rishi’s real identity.
Gajapati Bira Kishore Dev (2nd) was staying here as Babaji Dayanidhi Das, popularly known as Raja Rishi, in an ashram with his friend and religious mentor Mahanta Raghubar Das of Bada Chhata matha, after successfully escaping from Andaman Nicobar Cellular Jail known as Kalapani. He was fighting against the Britishers, so he was sent there as part of a British conspiracy. After tactfully returning to Khorda, his mother Rajmata Patamahadei advised him to stay here at Jaguleipatana in disguise.
Here one can have darshan of the deities with full hands and legs. It’s so because one night Raja Rishi dreamt of the deities in this form. Then he carved the figure of the deities and started worshipping in this ashram. Gradually, Ratha Jatra was held, and he was doing the chhera pahanra ritual.
I have been to both the places where Jagannatha, Balabhadra and Subhadra are in their full limbs. We all know that at Chhatia, Mahaprabhu are in Kalki Avatar, but here things are a little different. All three deities are holding their ayudhas(weapons) and have a very calm and peaceful look. Whereas the Kalki Avatar at Chhatia is angry. So, I felt both the full-limbed temples are not the same. Here, the deities are not in Kalki Avatar.
