ଲେଖା: ଶିଶିର ସାହୁ ମନୋଜ ରାୟଗଡ଼ା ପୂର୍ଵେ ଅଵିଭକ୍ତ କୋରାପୁଟ ଜିଲ୍ଲାର ଏକ ସଵଡିଵିଜନ୍ ଥିଲା । ଏହା ନାଗାଵଳୀ ଓ ଝଞ୍ଜାଵତୀ ନଦୀକୂଳରେ ଅଵସ୍ଥିତ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଅନ୍ଯତମ ଶିଳ୍ପନଗରୀ । ୧୫୧୬ ବେଳକୁ ଏହା ନଵରଙ୍ଗପୁର ରାଜ୍ଯର ରାଜଧାନୀ ଭାଵରେ ସ୍ଥାପିତ ହୋଇଥିଲା । ରାୟଗଡ଼ା ନଗରର ନାମକରଣ ପଛରେ ଏକ କିମ୍ବଦନ୍ତୀ ରହିଛି ।  ଜନଶ୍ରୁତି କହେ, ଆଦ୍ୟରେ ‘ରାୟ ଜାନି’ ନାମକ ଜଣେ କନ୍ଧଶାସକ ମୁଖିଆ ଭାଵରେ ଏହି ଅଞ୍ଚଳରେ ଶାସନ କରୁଥିଲେ । ନନ୍ଦପୁରର ରାଜା ଯୁଦ୍ଧରେ ରାୟ ଜାନିକୁ ପରାସ୍ତ କରି ଏ ଅଞ୍ଚଳ ନିଜ ଅଧୀନକୁ ଆଣିଥିଲେ ହେଁ ସେ ରାୟ ଜାନି ଦ୍ଵାରା ଵାରମ୍ଵାର ଲୁଚାଛପାରେ ଆକ୍ରାନ୍ତ ହୋଇ ବହୁ ଧନଜୀଵନ କ୍ଷୟର ସମ୍ମୁଖୀନ ହୋଇଥିଲେ । ତେଣୁ ସେ ରାୟ ଜାନି ସହ ମିତ୍ରତା କରିଵାକୁ ଵାଧ୍ୟ ହେଲେ ଏଵଂ ତାଙ୍କ ଆଦେଶରେ ଏ ଅଞ୍ଚଳର ନାମକରଣ ରାୟଗଡ଼ା ରଖାଗଲା ।ଏହାର ପ୍ରମାଣ ସ୍ବରୂପ ରାୟଗଡ଼ା ନଗରର ଗଡ଼ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ରାୟ ଜାନିଙ୍କ ସ୍ମୃତିରେ ଆଜି ବି ରହିଛି ‘ଜାନିପଥର’ । କେହି କେହି ମାନନ୍ତି ଯେ ରାୟଗଡ଼ା ନଗରର ଇଷ୍ଟଦେବୀ ମଝିଘରିଆଣୀ ହେଉଛନ୍ତି ସେହି ‘ରାୟ ଜାନି’ଙ୍କ କୁଳଦେଵୀ । କେତେକ ଅଞ୍ଚଳର କିମ୍ବଦନ୍ତୀରେ ରାୟ ଜାନୀଙ୍କୁ ପରାଜିତ ହୋଇଥିଵାର ବି ବର୍ଣ୍ଣନା କରାଯାଇଛି ।  ଏ ଵିଷୟରେ ରାୟଗଡ଼ା ଗେଜେଟର୍ ରେ ଉଲ୍ଲେଖ ରହିଥିଵା ତଥ୍ୟ ଏଠାରେ ଉଦ୍ଧାର କରାଗଲା: ” +++ +++ +++ Legend says that one Ray Jani was the traditional chieftain. The ruler of Nandapur failed to subdue Ray Jani even though the latter was defeated in open war. Finally the ruler of Nandapur and Ray Jani entered into an agreement after which a fort was built which was known as Rayagada. There is a stone described as “Jani Pathar‟, believed to have been inside the fort, which is worshiped till date by the tribal in reverence of Ray Jani. There is another story by which it is believed that after surrender in war with the ruler of Nandapur, Ray Jani invoked his last wish to be killed inside the fort as a symbol of supreme sacrifice for the welfare of his kingdom.
